My stepson disrespected me and my husband took his side.?

I was putting groceries away and the boy (he's 17) said, "What kind of bullsh*t did you buy this time?" To which I replied, "Why do you think it's OK to talk to me like that?" He then told me, "If you don't like it, get a job and move out!" and proceeded to cuss me out. And his dad sat there and ALLOWED his son to talk to me in that manner! I flipped out on both of them. I will NOT be disrespected by a child in my own home. Should his dad have taken up for his son, or should he have said something to him? How can I resolve the situation?
